How to Apply
- Speak with your healthcare provider about Medicare Extra Help (LIS). Your doctor, nurse, or social worker can help determine if you qualify.
- Gather required documents: proof of income (tax return, pay stubs, or Social Security statement), valid prescription, and proof of U.S. residency.
- Submit your application online or by mail. Visit the program website below or call the program hotline for assistance.
- Wait for approval (typically 2 to 6 weeks). Once approved, medications will be shipped to your provider's office or a designated pharmacy.

Medicare beneficiaries with annual income below 150% of the Federal Poverty Level (about $22,590 for individuals in 2026) and limited resources (under $17,220 for individuals) may qualify. Married couples have higher limits.
Extra Help can save an average of $5,000 or more per year. It pays Part D premiums, eliminates or reduces deductibles, and lowers copays to $0 for full-benefit recipients or $4.50-11.20 per prescription for partial-benefit recipients.
Apply online at ssa.gov, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or visit your local Social Security office. You can also apply through your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Many people who qualify never apply.
