How This Tool Works
The Patient Assistance Program Finder matches you with programs that can reduce or eliminate your prescription costs. You enter your medication name (with autocomplete for 100+ drugs), annual household income, household size, insurance status, and state. The tool calculates your Federal Poverty Level percentage and then scores 60 or more programs against your profile. Programs are categorized into four types: manufacturer patient assistance programs (PAPs) that provide free brand-name drugs, federal programs like Medicare Extra Help and Medicaid, nonprofit foundations that cover copays and premiums, and discount programs like GoodRx and Cost Plus Drugs. Each result shows a match quality rating (Strong, Possible, or Worth Checking), estimated savings, eligibility requirements, covered drugs, and a direct link to apply. All processing happens in your browser, so your financial and health data never leaves your device.
Example Scenario
An uninsured patient earning $28,000 per year in a household of 2 who takes Ozempic (semaglutide) for type 2 diabetes enters their information and clicks "Find Programs." The tool returns Strong Matches for the Novo Nordisk Patient Assistance Program (free 90-day supply for uninsured patients under 400% FPL), the Novo Nordisk Insulin Affordability Programs (emergency 3-month supply), and the Ozempic Savings Card ($25/month for commercially insured). It also shows Possible Matches for generic discount programs like GoodRx, Cost Plus Drugs, and the Walmart $4 list (which covers metformin if the patient's doctor considers switching). Worth Checking results include nonprofit foundations like HealthWell and PAN Foundation. Each program card expands to show eligibility details, how to apply, and the program website link.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a patient assistance program (PAP)?
A PAP is a program run by a pharmaceutical manufacturer that provides their brand-name medications at no cost to patients who meet income and insurance eligibility criteria. Most PAPs require that you have no prescription drug coverage (or inadequate coverage) and that your household income falls below 400% of the Federal Poverty Level. Applications are typically submitted through your doctor.
How is match quality determined?
The tool scores each program on three dimensions: drug match (does the program cover your specific medication or drug class?), income match (is your household income within the program's eligibility threshold?), and insurance match (does your insurance status qualify?). A Strong Match means all three criteria align. A Possible Match means two of three align. Worth Checking means at least one criterion matches and the program may be worth exploring.
Is my financial information stored?
No. All data processing happens entirely in your browser. Your income, insurance status, and medication information are never sent to a server, stored in a database, or shared with anyone. When you close the page, your data is gone.
Can I apply for programs directly through this tool?
No. This tool identifies which programs you may qualify for and provides a direct link to each program's official website. You apply through the program directly. Most manufacturer PAPs require a doctor to initiate the application. Federal programs are applied for through government portals. Discount cards like GoodRx require no application at all.
What is the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)?
The FPL is an income threshold set annually by the US Department of Health and Human Services. For 2026, the FPL for a household of 4 is $31,200. Most patient assistance programs set their eligibility at 300% to 400% of FPL. For a household of 4, 400% FPL is $124,800, meaning many middle-class families qualify for manufacturer PAPs. The tool calculates your FPL percentage automatically.
