How This Interaction Works (Mechanism)
Alprazolam enhances GABA-A receptor activity, producing sedation and anxiolysis. Additionally, diphenhydramine has anticholinergic properties that can cause confusion, dry mouth, and urinary retention. The combination of GABAergic and antihistaminic sedation is additive and can impair consciousness significantly.
